| This post by Turbo Gage is how mis-information gets started. The design is a step design to MAKE SURE that the clutch geometry is correct. It also functions as a platform for the clutch disk to grab, and as a heat sink for the heat produced by the friction of the clutch action. Why do you think that the aftermarket flywheels have steps if they're not necessary? If you grind off the step, the geometry will not be right - it's not just 'a bit more grab'. You may not think that .010 is much, but you have to remember that the pressure plate is designed for only so much movement. Remove the metal and you reduce the clamping force. Some folks have found out the hard way that their new clutch lasted for a month or so. Do a couple of SEARCHes and read all about it. You can't 'opt for a step' after you modify the flywheel - there's no going back. You have to replace it.
